Spain mourns the loss of flamenco guitarist and composer Manolo Sanlúcar. The musician, one of the most respected of his guild, died on Saturday at the age of 78 in a hospital in Jérez de la Frontera, Andalusia, not far from his hometown of Sanlúcar de Barrameda in southern Spain, the municipality said. She declared a three-day mourning.
Among many other awards, Sanlúcar received the National Music Prize in Spain in 2000. Along with Paco de Lucía, Vicente Amigo and Tomatito, he was one of the best known Flamenco guitarists.
He has performed not only in Spain and Europe, but worldwide, including the United States, Australia and Japan. Sanlúcar bore a stage name that he had chosen at an early age in honor of his hometown at the beginning of his career. His real name was Manuel Muñoz Alcón. (dpa)
